Scottish Heavy Athletics

From a field of only 8 local men first interested in learning the extreme sports of Scottish Heavy Athletics, things have come a long way in 15 years! With exponential growth, the Ancient Scottish Heavy Events portion of the Gathering of the Scots festival in Perth-Andover now encompass an event that hosts over 40 athletes in 6 different divisions annually!

Junior divisions (19 and under) was added to the schedule around 2004 and by 2006 the Gathering was the first games in Atlantic Canada to introduce a specifically tailored women’s division.

In 2009 the Gathering recognized the “more experienced” athlete by adding a Master’s division (40+) that eventually led organizers to undertake the hosting of the CSAF Canadian Masters’ Championship in 2011!

Not forgetting their roots, each year, festival organizers offer a Thursday afternoon “Introductory Workshop” for anyone young or old, big or small, man or woman, who are interested in learning more about these ancient sports!

Separate weekend competition classes are offered for these novice throwers to allow them the ability to learn the sport in a less intimidating environment. Thursday’s workshop participants even get to throw on Friday alongside the Masters!

The main event of the Heavy Events is definitely when the professionals take the field! Spectators’ each year now experience a reunion of World class athletes with the capability to break Field, Canadian, North American, or even World records with each throw! A truly International event, the Gathering of the Scots now attract competitors from Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and of course New Brunswick. Their job is to “throw things far” and they are very good at their job!
