Toss the Caber for your Country!

On Saturday morning, June 2, the action starts early (9:00 am) with the combined classes of the Lightweights (< 200 lbs.) and the Masters (40 years and older). These men will be finished by noon and then the women will take their place on the field by 1:00 pm. The women are always crowd favorites especially when locals Adena Robinson and Wendy McCrea are in the mix. Another local and new comer, Kaitlyn Clark, will be one to watch this year as she took many by surprise in her rookie debut last season.

There is a new twist to this year’s Gathering of the Scots Professional Heavy Events venue. Five American and five Canadian throwers will be joining forces in teams of two to battle one another in this year’s Nation’s Challenge! Each team will consist of one American and one Canadian athlete and they will be scored on their combined distances for each event.

Outside of the traditional stone, weights, hammers and caber events, there will be a couple of extra exciting events to test the athletes’ more ancient skills. It promises to be lots of fun! The pros start their day at 10:00 am and will be throwing for your entertainment right up until closing ceremonies.

You will see 4-time Canadian Champion, Matt Doherty return to claim his place again on the Athletes’ Trophy. Other Canadians trying to unseat him will be: Danny Frame from Greenwood, NS; Jason Baines, Dalkeith, ON; Scott McHugh, Lincoln, NB, and local, Kevin Robinson, Carlingford, NB. All of these guys will be competing at the Canadian Scottish Athletic Federation Professional Championship in Antigonish this summer.
The Americans will be led by World Record holder Mike Zolkiewicz from Springfield, CT; Jeff Kaste, Dover, NH; Dave Barron, Tarrytown, NY; brother Will Barron, Waterville, ME; and Rob Meulenberg, Bangor, ME. The team match ups should prove to be an interesting mix and most definitely competitive and entertaining!
